In an era when the city kvetches that there’re no good NYC bands, when half of the music scene has split for sunny California, the Mystery Lights are an anomaly. Not only did these bold young men reverse the direction – optimistically migrating east against the tide from the west coast, but they also landed in the wormy apple to immerse themselves in the action and diversity of New York City. They all share a Ridgewood apartment in Queens, playing music and recording in their basement. Betting against the odds to live the archetypical 20th century downtown musician lifestyle in 2016, though inevitably further east of the bridge, they also play with the kind of conviction, immediacy, and raw power of their mighty ancestors – from the Velvets to the Voidoids and beyond. The Mystery Lights are living proof that vital contemporary music, in this case real-deal rock’n’roll, can still be dreamed, constructed, and performed in the Empire City.

Mike Brandon and L.A. Solano have been in many different versions of The Mystery Lights under assorted monikers since their teens. In a heroic jump from the small town of Salinas, California to NYC, the band solidified its lineup to also include Alex Amini, Kevin Harris, and Noah Kohll. The explosive live shows gradually became the stuff of legend as the quintet won their following one fan at a time in dives from Brooklyn to the Bowery. Organically unfolding over the nights and months and years, the Lights’ sound evolved into a fuzzed-out hopped-up 21st Century revisionist take on 60s garage pebbles and 70s punk and proto-punk that is very much their own.

2016 finds these rock’n’roll knights embarking upon the next logical step – unleashing their own brand of kick out the jams on tour and in the studio. When Daptone Records launched their Wick Records rock imprint, they wasted no time approaching Mystery Lights as their inaugural act. Hot on the heals of the “Too Many Girls”/”Too Tough To Bear” single, Wick officially rolls out the Mystery Lights’ debut LP June 24. Are you ready?

Warbly Jets

Warbly Jets

‘New York-born, Los Angeles-based Warbly Jets are here to revive rock music from it’s indisputable funk. The newly released track “Psychomanteum” takes you on a pleasant journey inside yourself and showcases what the band means when they say they’re “coming for your ears, your money, your girlfriends, your faces.” Flirtatious guitar riffs, buoyant drums, and introspective lyrics meet to create a raw and natural sound which is much needed in today’s musical landscape. The highlight of the song for us is the slowed down, tripped out bridge which takes you down a well of echoey vocals and guitar. It’s the perfect tempo to get your headbang or your hippie sway on, throw your lighter up, and get lost in a groove. Just when it feels like you’re about to get completely submersed in the waters of your own mind forever, the Jets shoot you back out to the surface for some fresh air. Fuzzy guitars and bouncing drums lead the way for the final chorus, marching you back out into everyday life.’ – WE THE BEAT
